From the Eyes to the Hands and Back—On Observation and Storytelling
by Ines Rüttinger
︎︎︎

A famous Confucian poem says:
Calmly observe—
The myriad phenomena are self-evident
Nature narrates itself perfectly.

This quote floats through the aether of the internet and can be found on random websites concerned with awakening your inner Buddha. It aims to let your active ambitions go and urges you to observe the world and its sort of self-propelling system – while you remain in a passive state. So, why would anyone use it as a starter for a text about four artists and their practices? Mainly, because of the interests of observing and narrating. But while these are the common motives, they also are the crucial differences between the suggested non-action of the quote and the actual artworks.

The poem advises non-action, to remain passive: things will unfold anyway. Why is it that observing seems to be passive? While it may not be the most agitated act, it is nonetheless full of action. Observing means to listen, to watch, to feel, to touch. You need to be mindful, you need to focus and you need to evaluate. You have to fully process what you are observing while you are observing, otherwise it’s just looking at something.

Observation comes with silence, stillness, and empathy. It means you have to take a step back. Maybe here lies the issue. Often, when your actions and your output are not presented in an active, loud manner, it is considered unimportant. Because stillness, silence and listening are considered passive, they are often associated with being weak, being nonrelevant, being non-existent. These characteristics are often also connected with femininity and womanhood.

But in the act of observing lies its own power. As the poem suggests, once you begin to observe, stories begin to unfold. And while nature may narrate itself perfectly, it cannot tell you everything at the same time. There are indeed myriad hidden stories to uncover and many threads to unravel. The works of these artists step in and offer different narratives through four unique ways of storytelling.

These stories, brought together by the cooperation of four women from various backgrounds all over the world, seem similar yet individually different at the same time. Storytelling by women is less associated with the “high” art of writing or painting, but often is linked to “lower” forms of art, like handcraft such as weaving, quilting or stitching. The thread, for example, has always been thought to be able to fabricate charms, spells and narratives. Sometimes the technical quality was too distinguished to be understood by others, so handcraft became witchcraft. “Lesser” and “evil” are labels women are sadly too familiar with.

The intangible efforts of observing, which these artists put into their work create very tactile objects. The materials seemingly invite touch and the artworks themselves evidently originated from manual labour and are a manifestation of artistic handcraft, where creation becomes narration.

VIDA SIMON
Vida Simon’s interest in narration manifests especially in her drawings. The spontaneous and immediate nature of drawing appeals to her, with its inherent storytelling language. Drawing is flexible, can be done anywhere, anytime, with a lot of different materials on a lot of different materials. It can be figurative and abstract, rough and detailed, sophisticated and automatic. Drawing can be independent or part of a series. Drawing is thinking with your hands while simultaneously documenting your thoughts. Simon’s drawing may become part of installations and performances, which are also important facets in her practice. For her 2018 performance A Very Slow Blue, which was part of Le Chant des pistes sauvages and took place over the course of three hours, she gathered blue objects of all sorts. By re-arranging them, using them as props or animating them, she unfolded many narratives in a rather short span of time. Between the intimate detail and the greater installation, “The overall sense”, as she said herself, “was a dreamlike space where the sacred, everyday, and absurd intersected.” Performance, like drawing, not only became narration, but also ritual and invocation, conjuring scenarios and possibilities.

MIRJAM ELBURN
While in an installation or a performance objects seem to have their undisputable place, the works of Mirjam Elburn evoke an unsettling feeling of displacement”.  In our understanding of the world, materials such as hair have their proper place (and maybe time), and a gallery space seems like it shouldn’t be one of them. Elburn constantly works against our expectation of where (and again, maybe when) materials should be, how we encounter them and how they are used. She defies common rules and gives lost and found, discarded and thrown away materials a second life. Hair, sausage skin, paper bags, artificial teeth – they all shed their metaphorical skin and their previous lives. Using techniques like needlecraft, the artist allows these materials to continue new lives in different forms, free from superficial function. Instead, they seem to invocate new worlds, all of them ever changing and unpredictable. Elburn stretches these two characteristics in a newer experiment, where she investigates polaroid photos and their photosensitive layers. By dismantling the polaroid, double images, distortion and voids speak of the clash between the ephemeral and the eternal – they speak of time.

MARIA LAURA GALEOTTI
This clash can be found in Maria Laura Galeotti’s work too, though it is told in a different language. Whatever nature brings to form and to life in a temporary, ephemeral circle, the artist converts into something lasting, maybe eternal: she transforms plants and organic material into ceramics. One can imagine how manual the work with clay can be: digging into earthly matter, defining new forms from a lump of material, bonding with substance. Encased by earth and burned by fire, the plants both lose their form and pass it on. The artist’s craft has an alchemical, magical nuance to it. Nonetheless her research on indigenous techniques is fundamentally thorough and academic. She focuses on different ceramic glazes, local clays, the construction of furnaces and the  examination of materials. A collective research award by the Fondo Nacional de las Artes in 2015 allowed her to study pre-Columbian native cultures, both regarding their techniques and their worldview. Thus, Galeotti is not only finding her own voice in storytelling but also stands in a larger tale of ceramic narratives.

LAURA MALVICA
A different path in ceramics is taken by Laura Malvica. At first glance her practice seems to foreground the contrast between the imagined tenderness of flower petals and the seemingly harsh material. But then, the material is of a similar yet different fragility: a precious and breakable ephemera which makes it hard to believe it can be installed in any other situation than the current one. The fragments built another whole and the piles of ceramic petals seem to be at rest but also as if they could be moved by any sudden gust of wind. This tension between inertia and motion creates an instability which is the epitome of change. Laura Malvica does not only work in ceramics, but also explores fragmentality in other materials like papers of different weights and compositions or in drawings spreading over attached sheets of paper. But besides the perishable nature of Malvica’s works, there is also the promise of growth. Layer after layer of burned clay builds upon each other; papers grow more and more into space and with them, the drawings of plants they carry. The fragments’ theoretical possibilities of creating are endless, as are those of storytelling.

With this insight into four different ways of artistic storytelling with and about nature, it becomes evident that silent yet attentive observation feeds into complex narration, which then leads to an artistic production, challenging us to become active observers ourselves. While this can be said for most artistic processes, the four women in this group presentation convince with their distinctness and straightforwardness. By bringing together fragments of stories within their own narratives and by also allowing these to form a greater tale, Vida Simon, Mirjam Elburn, Maria Laura Galeotti and Laura Malvica show that there are many ways to tell many stories – and that we all might need to follow their lead and take a step back to calmly observe.

From the Eyes to the Hands and Back –On Observation and Storytelling
by Ines Rüttinger
